Agriculture Drainage Assistance

The Agricultural Drainage program is designed to provide critical drainage for areas of significant flow and possible pollutant concentration.
Agricultural drainage is the removal of excess water from the soil surface and/or soil profile of cropland, by either gravity or artificial means. The two main reasons for improving the drainage on agricultural land are for soil conservation and enhancing crop production.
Since 1988, the district has been providing services for agricultural drainage in conjunction with Wayne County as the sponsor of the program. With over 65 projects now on the books, the district spends a majority of the time maintaining the existing infrastructure and provides technical assistance with limited financial assistance for new projects.
Our office does provide technical assistance and review of drainage concerns, along with wildlife considerations such as beaver or muskrats.

Cases Studies

Before Implementation
This culvert crossing is a pinch point as part of a 12 mile drainage channel. It had been severely undersized, sedimented in and broken down over years of equipment and animal traffic. The District was able to assist in with flooding for many farm fields, pastures and landowners by clearing the debris that has accumulated over time and resize the culverts for adequate flow during peak flow situations.

During Construction

Completed Project

Dennison Creek Before
Dennison Creek is a .65 mile long project located in the town of Ontario. The project runs through eight property owners and maintains drainage for residential and agricultural land. Work on this project consisted of mowing and minor dipping.

During the Dennison Creek Project

After the Dennison Creek Project was completed
The Four Mile Creek project is located in the town of Ontario, but also improves drainage for land in the town of Walworth. The project goes through four landowners and is three quarters of a mile in length. The entire length of the project was mowed and about half was dipped. This project maintains proper drainage for agricultural and residential property.
